No bird in America. perhaps. is a
greater favorite than little Bob
White. whose cheerful spring call
has given us the name by which
he is widely known. though in the
south partridge is perhaps more
commonly used. In some parts of
the country "more-wet." or “no.
more-wet." is sometimes heard. while
quail is in common use in many sec-
tions.
Bob White's habit of living in
covies of a dozen or so. usually a
pair of birds and their season’s
brood. and his swift direct flight.
have always made him a favorite
with the sportsman. and many thou-
sands fali yearly to the gun. Yet he
is such a favorite. and his habits are
so beneficial. that cflorts have been
made in some states to have Bob de-
clared a song bird so that he might
be given year-long protection.
In April the covies break up and
soon the call of "bobowhite" sounds
from fence post or low tree. This
is the cell to his mate. and. if We
walk softly along quiet paths in his
chosen territory. e may hear the
softer musical no that make up
the remainder of h a love song.
The nest is well bidder; in brlar
patch or thick grass and holds from
a dozen to 20 white eggs. rounded
at one end and sharply pointed at
the other. Mrs. Bob probably picks

helps in their feeding and training
all through the season.
The little fellows can fly when
scarcely larger than sparrows. and
so well are they cared for that near—
ly all of them usually grow up.
When scattered they are brought to—
gether by the rallying call, a pecu-
liar Whistlo which is their only note
in winter. Each night they roost on
the ground in a. circle. all headed
outward to facilitate scattering in
case they are attacked.
