are. under way in the vicinity of East

culty. it appeared to be indicated
that the dog. had managed to break
that part of the snare that had been
anchored and get away.
NAGGING THE ALIEN.

various bills now pending in congress
for the registration and general
bounding of‘aiiona The two prin-
cipal bills are the Aswell bill and the
Johnson bill. The former makes it.
compulsory for aliens to register at
the post office in their residential
districts within ninety days after
their arrival. with an initial {cc of
810 and annual fees of 85 thereafter.
Aliens shall be compelled to carry
registration certificates which may
he demanded at any time and the
loss of which may result in the
alien's deportation. The Johnson hill
provides for the deportation of any.
alien convicted of any offense for
which he has served a year or more
in prison. immigration inspectors
are to be the sole judges of the facts
and equities in these matters and "it
shall not be n-sci-saary to state or
summarize lhe evidence in the or-
der."
The background of such vcxatious
bills is the Nordic. Ku Klux. 100 per
:cnt American superstition which
has grown up among us and which
regards any man who does not. share
the particular lmbecilitics of repro-
sentatives of the professional Nordic
as a menace. The late Samuel Gom-
pers predicted that this Germanlzlng
process would be followed by the
linger printing of every citizen. Gov.-
ernor smith of New York sums up
the situation by remarking that “to
subject the alien to s sample of the
kind of government which drove
