over its barring of Countess Cath-
cart because she had left her hus~

lady was being held on Ellis Island
and tho prudes were picking over
her record, the man with whom she
sloped walls already in America. No.
body thought about his moral turpi-

When this double standard of ad-

the state is less in debt than in a
generation. that it is growing more
economical. year after year. that
its various bureaus are becoming
more and more thrifty. that the
government is taking steps to amal-
gamatc and coordinate various de-
partments through which it func-
tions. and that. in general Connec-
ticut today is operated as cheaply
and with as little friction as any
state in the Union.
The methods by which the Re-
publican machine —'so-called —- in
Connecticut operates certainly are
reflected at Hartford. :70 long as the
reflection shows substantial thrifty
governments. the people will not
quibble about the playlv of politics.
especially when the principal ob-
jection of the disgruntled seems to
bear on the treatment awarded po-
liticians from one city. which. large
though it may be. still represents
only a small fraction of the total
