SNIFF WHISKERS ASKS QUESTIONS
At last the Hldy Go Land Ex-
press reached Tin Can Town and
everybody got out.
Poor Mister Havalook looked more
worried than ever, for. he said. the
rats always made him nervous. "Ono
never can tell what they are going to
do." he said to the Twins. “Rats
are so independable."
At that very minute a. large gray
rat in tomato-colored velvet came up
and bowed.
"I am Sniff Whisker. the mayor of
» Tin Can Town." he introduced him.
self. "is this an excursion?"
“Oh. No! No indeed." said Mister
Havaiook. “We‘re after a thief. Did
you see anybody acting suspicious?"
At this Mister Sniff Whisker blew
a whistle and twenty policemen rats
came rushing up.
"Take the testimony." said Sniff
’ Whiskers. “There has been a rob-
bery committed."
"I'll say there was." squeaked the
police captain, all done up in brass
buttons and a. cap. Someone stole
my cheese out of the toe. of an old
boot where i had it hidden. it was
fine cheese all green and crusty and”
"Hold on there!” said Sniff Whisk~
er. "This isn’t your party. Describe
the thief." he said to Mister linva-
look. "Name, age. weight, com-
plexion. occupation. nationality, and
all the rest of his history.”
“0h do I have to do that?" begged
poor Mister llavalook. "If I do I‘ll
.not turn her against me. too. and l
have enough enemies as it is."
"it's a her~—-tako that down." com-
mandi‘d Sniff Whisker to the others.
So all the. rat pallet-men took out
, little note books and wrote down,
“it's it her."
"And her name—is—-—" went on
poor Mister Havalook.
But here the Crinoiine Doll inter-
rupird. “i'll tell you all about it.
Her name to Rags and she's six
months old if she's a. day, and her

can keep up with you.”
Right here there. was a loud shriek
for help and everybody turned to sm-
what was happening. What they
saw was enough to make your hair
stand on end. it was the Turkey
Gobbler, and down his red throat the
Gingerbread lilnn was uhout‘to dis-
appear. indeed nothing but his one
foot was to be seen right then."
Nancy stamped her foot-4t was
all she'conld think of to do, but it
had the desired tffect. for the gobbler
gave a scared hep up into ithe air
and forgot to swallow. When he
got his breath, the. Gingerbread

Out flew the engineer of the “trip

"Yes, and Thanl-rglving

“You are safe enough now.“
The gobbier gobbled. "h‘ut‘kijys
are the hardest people in the world
to keep at home." he said.l “They
love to go off and hide. I'm no dif-
forent from the others. Besides when
i came here by the back‘way. I
often find lid-bits."
"Did you see anything of the Rag
Doll?” asked MISS Crinoline.
“YOS- I hassed her Just going into

"My skirt will be ruined!" shriekm
