in support of the two points in
modern education which she stressed
—-iirst, that perhaps modern sys-
tems do not lay an adequate founda-
tion of elementary training for those
'who must go on to higher schools;
and. second, that in trying to be
thoroughly modern. educators of to-
day may be losing some of the fine
points of old-fashioned systems.
In the work of the 1). A. R. to-
ward the perpetuation of those splen-
did principles with which America
was founded. there is perhaps noth-
ing more important than the train-
ing of the young in American ideals.
Mrs. I‘luel pointed out that one-
twentieth of the grammar school
Junior League
The Bridgeport branch of the
Junior League has made rapid
strides in the five years of its ex-
istence. It now numbers close to
one hundred members. and has a
finger in every charitable pie in the
community.
Effective Work
Its president. Mrs. John Walker
Hill. is a young woman of marked
executive ability. and former her
direction the League is becoming
the 'most effective amateur char-
liable organization which the city
has ever known. With the intro-
duction of the hour ,system care-
fully checked up. the League cesa-
es to be a place for the girl who
shirks work. And the societies
replying on the volunteer services
of League workers rest assured that
the. tasks assigned will be as faith-
l'uily performed as by professional
workers.
Braille Work
The League decided to substitute
braille transcribing of books for
the blind for the usually "sewing
committees". There is a constant
and growing demand for these
books and a very limited supply.
A cities of twenty was quickly
formed under the leadership of
Mrs. David Fleming. 3. teacher ap-
pointed. and you will find that
when a young woman of society is
invited out to tea she takes. not
her‘embroidery. but her stylus and
her slate with her. and punches
holes as she chats. The selection of
material to be transcribed is left
to the girls. the only stipulation be-
ing that it be something. not al-
ready in the Braille library in
Washington. ‘

ures." she said.
She continued to enlarge on some
of the ridiculous things sponsored
by educators today in the name of
modernism. dwelling particularly on
the singing of Jazz songs as spon—
sored by an rip-state superintendent
of schools. She read the words of
the songs sung.
"There should be more patriotism
and religion in our schools." she said,
further. "Is there not a common
ground on which people of all creeds
can stand? We are all believers in
the one and only God. Isn't there a
way of bringing religion back to our
schools?"

Take Up Braille Work
League members work for the
churches. the Girl Scouts. the
Y. W. C. A.. the Visiting Nurses
Association. and the Bridgeport
Family Welfare Society. They sell
articles at the Benefit Shop. They
do typing work. bookkeeping. act.
as chauffeurs. and even investigate
cases for charitable aid and turn in
reports.
Become Professional Members
Several Bridgeport girls who have
taken up careers of their own. have
been forced to drop their volunteer
work. and have qualified as profes-
sional members.
Two of this group are Mary
llincks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
William T. Kiosks of 152 Park
Place. and first president of the
Bridgeport League and Miss Hen-
rietta Bishop. daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Henry A. Bishop of 179 Wash-
Angton avenue.
Miss Hlncks has joined the . staff
of Francis '1‘. Joannos. architect.
with offices at 247 Park avenue.
New York city. Miss Bishop. whose
tume and decoration have been
utilized by the League in its annual
shows. is now associated with Miss
Taube. interior decorator. located
at 183 East. 56th street. New York
city. Miss Dorothy Northrop and
her sister. Mrs. John ltusling. botll
started with newspaper work later
going to New York to enter the
publicity field in connection with
Keith-Albee circuit of vaudeville
theatres. Miss Northrop is at pre-
sent also busy studying special
courses in dress design.

BOYS HOLD
OPEN HOUSE
Music. dancing and games featur-
ed the open house held at the De-
Molay club rooms on West avenue
Saturday night. ,
Ralph Lycett and "Pop". Lock-
wood were in charge, assisted by
Dave Brennan and Charles Lycett.
Christmas decorations in red. and
green crepe streamers and bells ad-
ded the correct festive note.
This afternoon the DeMolay Mo-
thers' club is holding its annual
meeting which includes election ' of
officers. ' .
Wednesday. the DeMolay boys
will hold the first basketball game
of the season. There will .be danc-
ing to the Melody Five Orchestra.
An innovation will be the. dancing
both before and after the game un-
til 11:30 o'clock.
This game will be played with
the Franklin Junior‘ High Alumnae.
Next week the game will be with
New Canaan. the following Week
with Bridgeport. and the second fol-
ldwing. with New Haven.
The DeMolsy boys are meeting to-
night at the club for business dis-
cussion.
Tomorrow afternoon and even-
ing. the Mothers' club will hold a
card party for the benefit of the
club.
