The salaries of Street Commis-
tioner Joseph H. Demons and De-
tective Sergeant John L. Roberts
were not appropriated by the l‘toard
of Estimate and ’l‘axation. :it its
meeting last evening.
Both requests were referred back
to the Common Council.
When the matter oi',the salary of
Sergeant itoberis was brought up.
William Ward. the new member of
the Board. questioned tliirlegality
of the appointment. and asked if
an opinion from the Corporation
t'ounscl could not be had on the
matter.

thought that the appointment should
be approved by the new Council, as
it has neVer been brought to the
attention of that body.
Mayor Thomas Robins stated that
he had not put. Sergeant Roberts to
work as he had no money. lie dc-

Detective Sergeant but that his
salary had been set by ordinance.
Mark H. Henderson then moved
that the matter be referred back to
the Council and for an opinion from
the Corporation Counsel.
When the question of the salary
for the Street Commissioner was
brought up. Mr. Henderson stated
that he did not see how the Board
could appropriate the, money. it' the
salary had not been set by the
Council. lie thought that an ordin-
ance should be, passed to cover the
matter. He then made a motion
that it be referred back to the
Council. This motion was seconded
by Arthur Waldron and passed.
The requests for additional salary
for the Tax Collector's Clerk and to
provide money for extra. assistance
in the Tax Collector's office were
also turned back to the Council.
Clerk’s Salary.
Tax Collector Lawrence K. Paul
stated that at the present time the
salary of the Clerk in the Tax Cot-
lector's office was only $18 and that
this was not enough, as the clerk in
the highway department received
$25 and she didn't have to do as
