You have asked me to again tell you some of the many reasons why I believe in Nor-
walk and am glad to make my home here.
That Norwalk is wide awake and progressive has, I believe, just been shown by the way
our people rose to the offer of Mr. E. T. Redford to pay half the cost of the new Nurses'
Home connected with the Norwalk« General Kospital..,.0ver$75,000»was raised in Norwailc
alone through public subscription,-.-all in the space of three 'weeks. Surely such a response
shows not only a sympathetic attitude toward a worthy local charity, but also an active and
generous one. ~ , ‘ ‘ .

When the Hospital Directors asked the N orwallt Kiwanis Club to organise and conduct
a campaign to raise $80,000 in Norwalk and the surrounding towns using the Norwalk
Hospital, the task at first looked to be an extremely _ cult and almost impossible one.
An organization was formed of Kiwanis Club membersqand many others who are not Ki-r
wanians, and within a few-days the actual work of soliciting contributions was begun. A1.
most unanimous public support of the project was immediately apparent and the drive
steadily progressedto a successful conclusion. ‘ " ‘ ‘ ‘ '

I had themgood fortime to be closely connected with the entire campaign and could see
that public spirit in Norwalk is united as never before. ‘From every side came people will- ‘
ing and 'anxious'to work or to give. All classes, creeds, and sections worked, together
toward a. common goal. Past differences .0! opinion were buried in the realisation that
what is for Nor-walk deserves the support of everyone. ‘
What happiness is to be had in a community. that isconstantly torn by petty bicker-
ings, selfishness, and narrow-minded'prejudice? ~ Differences of opinion must necessarily
exist, and it is only through discussion that‘sound progress can really be made. But :1."-
most everyone is trying in his own way to do what hebelieves is right and is seeking to‘
reach a common ground on which he‘can meet those of opposite opinion. It is me that
in the, past wevhave had some unfortunate expressions of narrow-mindness and-intolerance, '
but all communities have had such troubles.
The Hospital Drive is but‘vone example of whatycan be accomplished by almost unani-,
mous approval and support. Everywhere we hear comments on this fact, and many believe
that a new day is dawning for Norwalk whenour civic conscience will assertitseli' in active
and concerted public. eti'ort to take full advantage of 'our natural opportunities and to.
make this a 'cleaner, healthier, happier place in which to live.
