Situation
With wage scales in the building
craits well stabilized and only one
major dispute disturbing the tran-
quility or labor conditions. a. survey
recently completed and made pub-
lic tor the first time yesterday shows
thus the volume at i'sll construction
is furnishing smpie employment {or
building workers throughout the
country.
Replies to a nation-wide ques-
tionnaire indicate that the effect has
been to stabilise working conditions
in the building industry of the na-
tion rather than to create unem-
pioyment.
The expected seasonal decline oi
construction in comparison with the
boom summer months will remedy.
to a certain extent. the acute short-
age or plasterers. bricklayers and
lathers .a condition which has,been
a source or worry to contractors for
the last three years. It is reported
that contractors can new hire
tradesmen in these cratis without
having to pay bonuses along with
the minimum wage rates.
Chicago continues to keep abreast
or its former building records. the
valuation of permits issued in Sep-
tember being larger than those is-
sued in the same month last year.
Leaders of practically all trades re.
port their entire membership are
fully employed. They report also
that in the last three years the
membership of the building trades
has about doubled. The wage fixed
last spring remains in effect. It
ranges from $1.37 1-2 to $1.50 an
hour for skilled workers. with the
building laborers receiving 87 1-2
cents an hour.
Contractors in practically all
cities in Florida'sre rushing their
Jobs so that. the work will be com.
pleted before January 1. This is
especially true of hotel construc-
tion which is being erected to ac-
commodate winter tourists who be-
gin_ to arrive at Florida resorts in
the latter part of December and the
first part of January. Contractors
are working their employees nine
and ten hours a day. The pay
scale .tirere ranges from $111 to $15
for skilled building workers with
time and a half being paid after
eight hours work. While there is
plenty of construction now in pro-
gress the contractors report they
have but little trouble in hiring sui-
dcient help.
An attempt of the National Board
for Jurisdictional Awards to settle
the inicrunion dispute between
plasterers and bricklayers at its rc-
cont meeting in Washington (all
through when the representatives of
the bricklayers failed to appear be-
fore the board.
Negotiations between the inter-
national officials oi the bricklaycrs
and plusici'ers and the contractors
involved. however. are now under
way which may bring a. successful
