Sept. 12. .— The month just passed was the health- iest August in the history of the state, according to the statistical re- cords ot the state department or health,.Dr. Stanley H. Osborn. com- missioner or health, said yesterday. There "were no cases oi! smallpox in the state during the month and cases 0! other contagious diseases were in most instances considerably below the averages of former years. The number of typhoid cases. for-. ty-three. was the lowest recorded during August or any year. The previous low was forty-five crises last year. These totals are approxi- mately one-halt of the number re- corded in ,1921 when there were ninety-six. and in 1918 when there were 104. The infantile paralysis total for last month was fourteen cases. a decrease from thirty-six last year. This decrease despite the fact that the disease is unusually prevalent in many states this year. Several southern and western states have particularly bad epidemics, Dr. Os- born Bald. Diphtheria Virulent There were sixty-four cases of diphtheria. compared with ninety- one cases in August last year and 124 the previous year. While the cases of this disease are not as nu- merous this your, it‘ appears in u virulent form and the death rate has been rather high. Dr. Osborn advises parents to have their chil- dren immunized by the use of diph- theria antitoxln to prevent the pos- sible unhappy results which have followed many cases this year. The department has received nu- merous complaints on the great number of mosquitoes which have descended on communities during the summer. However, the commis- sioner says that Judging from the malaria reports, personal discom- fort has been the major result of the invasions. There were but fourteen cases of malaria in August. com- pared with thirty-six a your age. and high totals the preceding years. The scarlet fever average remain- cd about the same as during the past five years. There Were seventy- one cnses last month. eighty-fine. in August a year ago. eighty-seven in the samelnonth of 1028, sixty-six in 1922 and eighty-two in 1021. The total of,mcnsloa cases was low com- pared with the average, but was nine above that of 1924. Last year there were 148 cases. in 1923 there were 220, in 1022 and 1911 there were 140 each year, and 1920 there were 488. The prevalence of the disease this year. Dr. Osborn said. is due mostly to the tact that once the disease started it had many subjects to Work upon in the chil- dren who avoided it since the epi- demic ot.1920. Vaccination Benefit» A striking contrast is reached by comparison .0! the smallpox charts of Europe. especially England and Wales, with those of this country. Dr. Osborn said. This..country ls comparitively tree of the disease. he said, when the high death and sick- ness mics of several years ago are considered. (in the contrary. in England and Wales smallpox cases are now listed in the hundreds each week. while in 1920 and previously ten cases a Week was considered a high total. There were no cases in Connecticut laSt month. Dr. Osborn ascribes the change in England to the repeal of the com- pulsory vaccination law." The chil- dren or adults never vaccinated have no protection against the dis— ease. he said. and consequently n tree path to the spread at nnnllpox is opened.
