public hearing held last night the
voters and taxpayers authorized the
selectmcn to call a special town
meeting to vote on the spproprie-

carry out the school project. Among
those who spoke in favor of the plan

HARTFORD. Aug. 25.-—(AP) The
iron bridge over the Connecticut
river between Haddam and East;
Haddam “grew” nearly two inches
yesterday morning with the result
that. traffic on either side of the
river was held up an hour at noon
while bridge tenders struggled to
close the draw. ' Previously, the
structure. expanded by the heat in
the 30 degree temperature rise. had
jsmmed as efforts were made to
open it in response to impatient
blasts of the tugboat Spartan's Whis-
tle, and with its tow of four barges
loaded with coal. the the Spartan.
was turned around in mldstream to
avoid colliding with the bridge.
