the custom of treating such matters

mediately affected. and no publicity
attends a.separation. According to
one statement published here. the
old Moslem law which confers upon.
the husband arbitrary power over
the wife still obtains and to procure
a divorce is extremely simple. A man
wishing to be rid of his wife need
merely summon a. witness and sol-
emnly declare that he divorcee her.
and the thing is accomplished. The
wife cannot appeal but is entitled
subject to any specific marriage

Our lesion deals with the greatest
war in history—vs war that has been
in progress ever since history began
and in which every man to some ex-
tent has been engaged. '
cry individual life. and it is a war-
fare that in every age has repre-
sented a conflict'in which men line
up upon one side or the other.
This warefare Paul calls the war-
fare of the flesh against the Spirit,
and Spirit in this case is spelled with
‘a capital “8" indicating that it is
not only man's spirit but the Spirit
of God.
For in this battle there are hosts
that war in the individualheart up-
on each side. Every man is the in-
heritor of tendencies and influences.
Many generations lie back of each
individual life,
No One Secure.
Every new and again a man who
supposes that he is free from the
lure of certain evils or temptations
is amazed at the violence of some
temptation that assails him. It is
some taint of heredity or some re—
sponse to evil circumstances com-
ing out in his life. and it is only occa-
sionally that we , ealize fully how
strong are the 1 cos of evil that'
war against our higher aspirational
and purposes.
But in this warfare the Spirit of
God is leader of the hosts of good.
All our best instincts. our lofty vis-
ions. our impulses of love and right-
eousness. are mustered under the
banner of the Spirit. and this is the
significance of Christ in human life
that he is the great captain of our
divation.
It is necessary in this warfare that
we should understand very clearly
the nature of the coniendins forces
and the nature of the conflict. War-
fare is often about issues that are
not understood and sometimes good
men range themselves on opposing
sides. 80 it is in this warfare be-
tween good and evil; men have not
always discerned correctly where
good and evil lie.
What does Paul mean. for instance
by the flesh. and “shot does he mean
by the Spirit? lilanlfestly he does not
mean that there is any particular ex-
11 attached inherently to the body or
to bodily functions.
Jesus was very insistent upon this
point. lie rebuked in the strongest
manner those who were punctilious
about their bodies and who neglecred
their souls.
