AUTO MARKERS
HARTFORD. July 10. (AR)—
Postage on meter vehicle registra-
tion markers and certificates applied
for by mail will hereafter be paid
by the state motor vehicle depart-
ment. a pamphlet which the de-
partment issued covering the
changes in registration fees effec-
tive July 1. states. since the post-
al rates were changed by Cong‘ess,
an additional charge of eight cents
has been made by the department
to cover the postage in cases
where registrations were requested
by mail. Previously the charge for
postage was six cents.
Under the new motor vehicle
law .which went into effect last
week. all registration fees'are now
figured to the nearest even fraction
of the dollar in multiples of
cents.

DAYTON. Tend. July 10 (AP).—
An investigation of the living costs
in Dayton and especially the rates
of one Dayton hotel has Just been
made by the city commission.
No official action was taken other
than the erection of a sign across
the street front the hotel, urging
new arrivals to call upon the Pro-
gressive Dayton Club before making
arrangements for their stay in Day-
ton.
An investigation brought out that
after today the hotel will assess its
guests eight dollars a day for single
rooms and meals. Fiev dollars a day
will be charged those who are willing
to share rooms with others.
Rooms procured through the Pro-
Kreasive Dayton club. the commisst
was informed, were being charged
for at the rate of two dollars a. day
without meals and 75 cents for each
meal.
Through a corps of workers al-
ready on the ground, a. Chicago
group is completing arrangements
for broadcasting the proceedings of
the Scopes trial.

Electricians were working fever-
ishlly yesterday to install in the
Rhea. county court house the last of
scores of wires to carry the news of
the Scopes evolution trial out to the
world.

Gorky’s Adopted Son
Not Killed in Morocco
PARIS. July 10.~—A report that
Zinovi Pechkoff. adopted son of
Maxim Gorky and commander of a
battalion of the Foreign Legion in
Morocco, had been killed in the
fighting against the Riftian tribes-
111en. was declared today to~be un-
founded.
Pechkoff has distinguished him-
self during some of the hardest
fighting. and has been cited in army
orders and proposed for promotion
to the rank of major.
He lost an arm during the great
car, after Which in 1916 and 1917.
he made lecture tours in the United
