woods. chanced upon two ivory
colored wake-robin. normally deep
red flowers. Ho examined them
carefully to make sure that they
were not the regular white trilllum
and proved that they really were a
rare Variation from the red trllllum
(trilllum crectum) or wake-robin.
In reporting his find. he wrote:
“I did not pick either of the spec-
imons. for I hoped that someone
else interested in floral rarities
might have the good fortune to see
this remarkable phenomenon."
How many other persons passing
through a wood. not “even well
enough informed to know that here
was something rare in blossoms and
not appreciative enough of. the

plucked those two blooms along
