vancing the project to its present
state. Once the transportation facil-
ities on both land and water in the
Calumet district are assured. it is
believed the steel com unies will ex-
pand plants and bull new mills to
supply the demands of the central
and fat west. Engineers estimate
that within 10 years the industries
located in the section will be valued
at $100,000,000 and will employ half
11 million men .
The effect will not be confined 191

pers count on improved conditions
for the transportation of their goods
from all sections because of the con-
noclions by water and rail which
will put inland points in a. position
to tulle advantage of port water
rates. Eventually, it the St. Law-
renco waterways project is complet-
ed. shippers of the middle west
would be able to send their products
direct to European ports by water.
The tedelul government has just
granted 1 permit to deepen the Cal-
ument River to a. depth of 14 feet
fox 8 miles with a channel width 01‘.
90 feet at the bottom.
