That cure of human cancer may per.
haps be achieved as the result of study
of plant cancersis the belief advanced
by Dr. Michael Levine, biologist in charge
of cancer research at Monteflore Hos-
pital, New York City. In the evils that
besmirch the beauties of the vegetable
World may be discovered those clues
which will bring to mankind relief from
the most baneful and destructive of
human ailments. '
From his exhaustive study of plant
cancers, Dr. Levine declares that cer-
tain types of plant tumors, known as
crown galls, are analogous to human and
animal cancer. Plant diseases of this
kind, he pointed out, "are of increasing
economic importance. Laws prohibiting
the sale of plants thus‘ infected. have
been enacted in forty-four States and
in Canada.

"Other plant, diseases of growing

club root. These diseases are caused
by other forms of microscopic organ-
isms. Both are types of plant cancers.
Potato wart is relatively a new disease
in America. While this disease has
been known in Europe since .1898,- it
was not until the potato shortage of
1911-12 that diseased potatoes were
introduced and were found in 1918 in
the mining section of Pennsylvania.
“Club root of cabbage, turnips,
radish, cauliflower and wild mustard
is another prevalentiorm of plant can-
cer. Lime, added to «(the soil, and ro-
tation of crops are efiective means of
keeping . this .disease in check.
“Since the discovery of X-rays and
radium, efforts have been made to de-
termine their value in the cure of malig-
nant discusses. The object of these ex-
periments on plant tissues is to better;
understand the influence of radium on
