Barton is soon to have a special
town meeting to act upon proposed
appropriations to enable its Town
court and Police department to
function. The court and police do-
partment were created by the Leg-
islature recently and the appoint-
ment of a. judge in pending now be-
fore the Judiciary committee. The
job will be part time and the salary,
lt‘is reported. will be $1,000 per an-
num. The judge will appoint a. pro-
secutor. who will receive a like
salary and a. clerk.
The Police department will eon-
sist or a chief. a. captain and , five
patroimen. These “Kw-ill be named
by a Police commission of three
which commission is to be appoint-
ed by the chairman of the Board of
Finance. 13. G. Evans, the chairman
of the Board of Assessors. Clarence
Scofield .and the first selectman.

There is considerable opposition
to the new “offices and it is expect-
ed that the opposition will endeavor
to prevent the town meeting from
appropriating funds to enable the
court and police department to
function. -

Board of Selectmen at a. meeting
yesterday awarded the Compo Beach
dining ‘paviilion privilegesuo Mrs.
Jessie Bohr. proprietor of the Hid-
den Door teeI room here.‘ Mrs. Rohr
conducted the pavillion last year.
paying; $3.000 for the privilege. but
lost money on the venture. Her bid
this year was $1,500.
Other bids were received from
Milton Harrington. ‘a. member of
Staples High school faculty, whose
offer was $1.600, and Mrs. Magaw
of the Shadowiawn tea house in
Norwalk. who bid $1.500 plus a per—
centage of ten per cent. In award-
ing the privilege to Mrs. Rohr the
seleetmen stated that the small dit-
terence in the monetary considera-
tion was offset by the fact that Mrs.
Rohr was a local resident and busi-
ness woman. that she was experi-
enced becaouse of her connections
with the beach last year. and also
that it seemed no more than fair to
give her the opportunity to make up
for the losses sustained because of
the high figure she paid the town
last year for the privilege.
