The Norwalk Hospital Bill asking
s. 825.000 appropriation for the
local institution came up for hear-
ing yesterday afternoon before the
State Legislative Committee on
Approrlatlons. State Senator
Frank W. Gregory. Representative
IHsrvey Kent and Carleton B.
Straysr. Superintendent and Gener-
al Manager of the Norwslk Hospi-
tal. spoke in favor of the measure.
The appropriation last year was
832,000. and the extra $3.000 was
requested to take care of the added
expense of constructing and main-
taining the new Nurses' Home.
Mrnsuayer also appeared in oppo-
sition to a bill which would restrict

news to me.” said Senator Howard
s. Challenger of Bridgeport. when
questioned concerning the report
that he is to become tax commis-
sioner in that city provided the
“ripper” tax bill of State Tax Corn-
mimioner William H. Blodgett is
passed by the Legislature.
Although there is every reason
to believe that Challenger will
withdraw from the contest for the
Fairiield county commissionership
with the assurance of another
equally mtiafactory berth as his
reward. nothing has as yet been de-
finitely decided. it is authoritatively
stated.
“I am still a candidate for county
commissioner." declared Challenger
last night. Asked about the report
that he will withdraw from the
contest before the Falrfleld county
caucus next Needay. Challenger rec
plied: “I am not crossing any bridges
until I come to them."

conference yesterday with Harry
Mackensie. Roraback lieutenant. and
other state organisation leaders. The
conferences. it is said. had to do
with the Bridgeport Senator's politi-

steamer Facco. from Mannnilo.
The Thyra sank 80 minutes after
the crash. which occurred in a fog.
The crew of the Thyra was taken
ct! by the schooner Irma. Charles-
ton. S. C.. for New York. and later
transferred to the Facco.
