romance and adventure of the
French Foreign Legion. It opens
with the star. as Carmelita. beins
rescued from drowning by Luigi
(Linow) strong man with s thirdv
rate traveling circus. He trains the
air! to become a member of the
troupe. later killing his yOung vio-
linist. in a moment of Jealousy over
love for Carmelita.
Luigi flees the country to escape
justice for his crime and enlists in
the Foreign Legion in Algeria. Full
of gratitude for his having saved
her life and believing in him im-
plicitly. Carmelita flees with him to
the little North African town -of
Sldl-bel-Abbes. where she opens a.
wine shop.
Marvin. a young American recruit
in the Legion. secs Carmelita and
immediately falls in love. thus in-
curing the wrath of Luigi. now the
regimental bully. who "frames" it.
so that Marvin is condemned to “lo
peleton." the most killing punish-
ment meted out to offenders of the
Legion's discipline. but Carmelita
brings about his release by bribing
one of the guards.
Luigi decides to take matters into
his own hands. There is a terrinc
fight between the two men. The
young American is worsted but
Luigi is stabbed in the back by s
legionnaire who has long nursed a
grudge against him.
Carmelita. knows that Marvin will
be accused of the crime and. with
the aid of John Boule. veteran of
the Legion and Marvin's selfoap-
pointed guardian. she gets them-
erican to the border. A scene of
Carmelita and Marvin at the rail
of a steamer bound for the States.
brings the picture to a fitting close.
So much for the “OM let
it suffice to say that. as regards
acting. it brings Gloria to the.
screen at her very best. '

tory, appraisal and transfer of tax papers in the estate of the late
Henry R. Towne, head of the Yale 3: Towne Manufacturing com-
pany of Stamford, who has been succeeded as chairman of the
board of that corporation by Congressman Schuyler Merritt of
Stamford, were filed in the probate court for the district of Litch-
Hamlin, as attorney for the ad-

Construction of about thirty miles
of new highway will be called for
in work 'whlch the state highway
department is preparing for sub-
mission t'o contractors for bids. in-
augurating the 1925 road building
season for the state. Competitive
bids for the new improvements will
bc'sought and it is expected that the
project will be ready for bids in
about two weeks.
'Ten projects are involved in the
work contemplated. the largest of
which is in Windsor. Windsor Locks.
East-Granny and Sumeld. where
about nine miles of new construction
will be carried out on the so-csl‘led
Northampton turnpike. This. con
tract will also include work on
Spring street. Windsor. ' _
Another'feature will be a contin-
uation of the widening of the Bos-
ton Post road from its present
width of eighteen feet and is. to
thirty-six feet. Evenwslly’this work
will be extended from Bridgeport
to the New York state line. Con-
siderable prcress has been made
in the vicinity of Greenwich. and
present plans call for the addition of
more than a mile at Westport.

of mimicry that is cleverly utilised.
