One of the most active organim-
tions in the city is the Girls' and
Women's club. which new has its
headquarters in Wall street.
Since it was first organised this
club has been a general "get to-
gether" place (or the girls and wo-
men of the city. where they might
congregate (or social. educational
or business aflaira.
Every week the three dlflerent
chapters of the club meet. and not
a month goes by but what the girls
have planned three or {our events.
parties. dances or Just plain socials,
to be held in the club rooms.
Last Friday one of the most en-
joyable events of all was held. In
the form of a St. Patrick‘s party
and opcn house meet. At that time
the hostess committee received and
greeted the guests.
This hostess committee deserves
special commendation (or its good
work la the past in organizing the
various chapters. supervising the
worlt done in the various classes and
social events {or which the club has
become so famous.
Three years ago a small group of
women in the city decided that one
of tho main essentials that Norwalk
lacked was a club room‘tor girls
and women. They talked the mat-
ter over and. tlnaliy. decided to or-
gauize a "get together" club. under
the auspices of the Norwaik League
of Wsmen voters.
Quarters were procured in the old
bank building at 68 \\’all street. the
club was opened and membership
increased so test that it was difficult
to take care of all those who ap-
plied.
it was through the kindness of
Mr. A. J. Collins. owner of the
building. that the women were able
to "hold forth“ in the old bank
building. and there they stayed from
December. 192:. until the following
summer.

Upstairs the floor is divided into
three tine rooms. one of which is
used as an entertainment room. one
as a sort of an ante room and the

there is a nice little kitchen for the
use of the club members.
Any one oi the chapters may give
a social. party or entertainment in
the club rooms. merely by first mak-
ing sure that the club has not been
emerged (or that particular night.
Any group of ten girls. whether
or not they belong to the same
chapter. providing they are mom-
bcrs. may give a social event in the
club. For these rooms are (or the
girls. {or their use and their enjoy-
ment. and it is up to them to get as
much i’un as possible out of the or-
atomization.
Monday night the C. S. chapter
meets: Thursday night the Jolly
Jesters gather. and every other Wed-
nesday the J. F. F. meets. lnci-
dentally. J. P. F. means “Just For
Fun." This chapter. however. does
not always meet regularly. the gath-
erings dept-riding to a great extent
on the call of the president.
On the other nights 0! the work
the different cistern are held. Miss
Gertrude Parr is In charge of the
millinery: Mrs. Annie Howell the
dressmaking. and Miss Edith Cuo
neo. the "musicians." There is also
a baakctry class and a china paint-
ing class. both of which are given
undcr tho superflsiop of members of
the Bridgeport Art league.
One of the biggest advantages of
the club seems to have been quite
overlooked. This is the rest and
reading room. which is open at all
hours of the day for members.
Since there is no other place in
the city where the girls or women
may go during the day time for rest
and recreation. the club should be
well patronized.
The club rooms are very comfort-

"Back in the old days" the or-
ganisation ran a sort of women‘s
exchange. where basketry. china and
various kniclznacks were sold during
the week. and every Saturday morn-
'ng a special food sale was held.
This scheme did not prove prac-
tical. however. since it made it nec~
vssary (or the club to keep someone
on duty all the tlmt‘. which is not
done at the prrsent. There is a mac
tron now. or course. Mrs. Grantham
-—and an excellcnt matron she is.
But she cannot be on duty all the
time.
The expenses of the upkeep o!
the club at the present time are to-
talled from the membership dues
ard from the verlous entertainments
“hich the girls and women "put on"
during the year. One of the. most
successful eve-r arranged was the
"Bob White" musical comedy given
last year which netted 3400.
The club has grown. is growing.
and will continue to grow. From
the small nucleus of three womt‘n.

Lauder. who were the “main

club has increased to a membership

Some day the members of the

have a house of their own. But that
