Business
Just another of those pathetic
little tales forms the plot of "The
Ragman.” in which Jackie Coogan
stars. which 0 cued
last night. D at the Regent
A New York City orphanage burns
and many thrilling rescues are ef-
footed. But one boy is reported miss-
ing. That's little Tim Kelly. Tim
finds a place to flop in Max Gins-
berg's old Junk cart. and pleads not
to be sent back to the orphanage.
Riding around on the cart. the kid
proves himself a born trader. Tim
does the work while olrl Ginsberg
sits and broods.
Ginsberg's brooding is due to the
fact. that he has been robbed of the
profits of a. sewing machine shuttle
invention. He had perfected the de-
sign when working in a. sweat-shop
on the East Side of the city and had
intrusted his plans to a. pair of slick
lawyers. who did the rest. Too ig—
norant of business to fight for his
rights. he has drifted to the back-
wash of life. where he struggles no
longer.
But young Tim Kelly is a fighter.
He has made his Jewish benefactor‘s
business a fighting proposition. Its
the kid who wages war against rival
Junk dealers. and its the kid who
resolves to devote his life to right-
ing tho wrongs done to the old man.
Tim's smiling face helps in trade
where Ginsberg's perpetual gloom
repels. and their firm—for Tim has
put the firm name of KELLY and
GINSBERG on the cart-—prospers.
One of Tim's hest turns of luck is
when a. wealthy woman. wishing to
get. rid of a. lot of old clothing. gives
it all to him. In the pockets of one
of the suits. Tirn finds a. letter. writ-
ten by one of tho crooked lawyers.
that gives all the evidence a. court
would need to establish the rights of
Ginsberg to the profits of his inven-
tion. But Tim doesn't realize the
letter has any value. and burns it.
It is only later when talking to
Ginsberg that he gets information
that connects up with the letter.
and then?—Then Tim goes out to
clean up for Ginsberg. And he does
it by means as logical as they are
ingenious. Tim proves himself a
first class dealer in "high class junk."
for one item alone is worth a. for-
tune.

To review “The Gaiety Girl,"
Mary Philbin's newest. vehicle. is a
thresholdd task. In the first place. it
is by far the most pretentious story
the "Merry-Go-Round Girl" has ever
been seen in. Secondly. the cast sur-
rounding hpr is one of the most re~
markablo with which she has c\cr
been seen. And thirdly, it is staged
on a scale so lavish that. a whole rc-
markable reproductions of London's
famous Gaiety Theatre. the Ritz. the
ancient Castle of Pencarreg. home
of former kings. and other spectacu-
lar scenes in which the story adapt-
ed from 1. A. R. \‘t‘ylie's famous
novel. “The Inheritors." is laid.
Mary Philbin is seen for the first
time in one of her big productions in
modern garb in the new picture. di-
rected by King Baggot. which opens
today at the Palace Theatre. She
enacts tho aristrocratic English girl
who is forced on the stage by pover-
ty. Through the hectic life of tho
tinseled butterflies of the Gaiety,
where nobiemen act. as stage-door
Johnnies. into a. marriage brought
about by trickery and lies. and
through a. maelstrom of conflicting
human motives and emotions her
path is beset. by grief. .
The cast is splendidly convincing.
Joseph J. Dowling. as the stern. old
grandfather. and William Haines.
who plays her lover. are more than
acceptable in their roles. Grace Dar-
mood is scintillating as a butterfly
show girl. and Freeman 8. Wood is
convincing as the dissolute million-
aire's son.

ly motives. realizes that the same
strength by which the jungle beasts
maintain supremacy is useful in
dealing with mankind at times.

ed for the screen from a novel writ-
ten by Norman Duncan. The story
is located in a small settlement close
to the logging camps of the North
woods; 8. squalid place where hu-
man parasites lay in wait for the
logger.
Primarily the story deals with
the efforts of a Bowery derelict. rc-
deemcd through the instrumcmality
of a mission worker. to bring some
measure of better living to the sc-
ceptanca of the logger. In Swamps
End. notorious settlement in the
great North Wools. he finds opposi-
tion of the saloonkeepcr and the
gambler. but he batters them into
realization that the Gospel may be
represented by one who knows how
to use his fists.
