IN FEBRUARY
One thousand motor vehicle ac-
cidents have been reported to the
Sfaté Motor Vehicle department for
the month of February. a decrease
of nttyoseven from the record for
February." 1924. notwithstanding the
fact that the normal increase in reg-
istrations and the better driving con-
ditions this winter have brought out
considerably more traffic than last
year. Ten of these accidents of the
past month result ‘d fatally. making
a total of twenty-five for thcnrst two
months of this yrar, as against thir-
Ly-one to rims corresponding period
of last year.
The record number of accidents in
February occurred on a foggy day
and many of thin: were attrlbuted
to the weather. That day was Feb-
ruary 9. and seventy-seven accidents
are checked against it. The follow-
ing tuo days “are a‘so leggy. but the
records show a big drop in accidents.
thirty-seven being listed for; Febru-
ary 10 and twenty-four for February
II. The least number Q: accident.-
were reported for Februar} 1!. when
the weather is recorded to have been
“fair."
Only two of the fatalities occurred
on extremely foggy days. Two chil-
dren were killed by coasting into
suicinob‘lles during the month. one
man was killed v hen an automobile
run into a railroad train in Ton-ing-
:oa. one boy on s ti;;.clc 26st his life
when he got into the path of an on-
'cnzaing tru ck. two men were killed
by the oxerturning of their car. a
chill fell from one car and was ta-
tuliy injured and in the rest of the
casts pedestrians were killed by au-
tomobiles. All but one of the driv-
ers involved in fatal accidents in
February were men. The depart-
ment immediately calls in the oper-
ator's licvnse of people in charge of
automobiles which figure in fatal ac-
cldcnts.
So good a. memory as President

pression of Governor Coolidge's ex-
perience with the Massachusetts leg-
islature of 1919 when lho'saiarles

of the Governor's veto. . It the
congressional salary increase were
not contained in an appropriation
bill carrying on immense number of
other items, a. veto would now seem
inevitable.
