1748—Made first trip as surveyor after
studying it for some time.
1752—Came into possession of Mount Ver-
non by death of his brother, and devoted him-
self to management of plantation.
1759—Married Mrs. Martha Custis.
1774—Named delegate from Virginia to
first continental congress in Philadelphia, after
having won local fame as a leader of colonial
forces in the French and Indian wars. '
1775—Named commander-in-chief of Con-
tinental army. .
1776—Defeated in battles of Long Island
and of White Plains; victorious in battle of
Trenton. '
1777—Won battle of Princeton, but lost at
Brandywine. Then followed the terrible winter
at Valley Forge.
