BOSTON. Dec. 19.-—The Boston
and Maine railroad issued a state-
ment here today explaining the 'ac-
tion taken at Greenfield against the
De Luxe Transportation company of
Northampton, operating mo r buses
in competition with the rai road. It
was stated that the bus company was
operating in violation of law. hav-
ing been refused licenses in North-
ampton four times. and holding no
license except in Springfield. al-
though it operates' in seven other
towns. and the law requires it to
have a license in each place. ,
"In order to conserve the best in—
terests of the traveling public and
or the stockholders of the road, .1:
has been necessary to go to the
courts for remedial action. other
means 0: redress not being availa-
ble." the statement said. It was add-
ed that the buses were in illegal
competition with the railroad for
