Just about two weeks ago.
Today it is in tho roos or an oil
boom which promises to break many
modern records—a new Eldorado.
The population grow over night tram
s. row hundred to ten thousand and
more. and still they come. Whore
but a single derrick raised its peaked
head above a black hole and a single
hopeful crow worked by day and by
night a fortnight ago. today stands
more than two hundred dcrricko—
a veritable forest or them. and at
about hall' that number the rigs are
running and the big steel drills are
pounding down to the undo more
than halt a mile deep which in the
end will spell fortunes to the favored
few and disaster perhaps to the
many——-the other rigs will swing into
action as soon as the tools are placed
and the fuel and water for the dril-
ling engines can be rushed in.
The excitement all dates back to
Thanksgiving Day. ’whlch seems al-
most like ancient history new at
Wortham. ‘That day the first big
gushcr was shot. The crew felt the
day would bring good luck. There
were some tenas moments after the
big charge of dynamite at the bottom
or the hole had been touched of! but
the wait was not for long. Wlih‘a
roar the block all came rushing out
o! the eight inch pipe in a stream
that appeared as thick as a man‘s
body. * A high procure pool had
been tapped. The rush was on.
The Thanksgiving well has been
running twelve thousand barrels a
day at one dollar and a quarter a
barrel. On Thursday last a second
and still greater guahor was shot. It
is running fifteen thousand .barrels
choked down and might make over
twenty thousand with open valves.
It is small wonder then that a bun-
dred crews are lighting tovurlshly to
reach the main pool or a sister pool
while the big pro-ore lasts and
while the black gold comos pouring
outta tortuno's flood.
Yet the oil boom of today no long-
er is a highly colored thing compar-
able to-tho gold rushes of the early
times. Conduction or an oil boom
become a sort or set science. it
is a highly organised affair in which
the biggest of the oo-callod “trusts"
arm tooth and hall with "wad-cat-‘
ter'f and independent for the (rolls
of the tlclds. There no longer is
any grabbing of land but wild bid-
ding and over bidding for losses and
drilling rights. The land holders
grant these rights to the companies

rush has not only engulfed the town
of Worthsm but a good part or the
surrounding country.
It is not a hap-hsasrd rush. how-
ever. 'l'ho geologists already have
lined the probable profitable bounds

sprung up with the orderllness or a
big circus or an army on the march.
