'An appreciation of good architec-
ture by the individual and a move
toward zoning in the city, are both
needed before Nor-walk can make
any great strides toward being a
more beautiful town. according to
Rhys H. North, architect and treas-
urer of the R. H. Fuller Construc-
tion Company.
The present trend of home build—
ings is toward a dignified Old Eng-
lish styie, with sharp pitched roofs,
and with wings, according to Mr.
North, who does not torsee any dis-
tinct period growth oi.’ the present
age, but rather an adaption of local
facilities to the individual structure.
He also advocates the strict design-
ing of a house to the lot it is to
occupy. taking into consideration
the surrounding conditions. and
other buildings that will be its
neighbours. '
“Many people do not yet realize
the possibilities of the architect in
connection with the building of their
homes," said Mr. North. "They fail
to appreciate that a beautiful struc-
ture. with good architecture, can be
constructed as cheaply. or practic—
ally as cheaply, as a. nondescripr
box. We have too much 'barn arch-
itecturc' now’iis it is—too much
hackncyed Old English. T e pres-
ent trend is toward a good 0 d Eng-
lish with a steep pitched roof. and
wing constructions. Of course, to
construct a wing costs more. but if
a person builds his house to live in
he should want it as perfect on the
outside as on the inside.
"It is often the custom for a per-
son to construct hi; house like a
box. Apart from the fact that his
place has no distinction in appcma
ance. it. depreciatcs in cost as soon
as it is completed. \‘i'ith correct
architecture. on the contrary, his
houseis more saleable. it is worth
more,and will bring more. A bank
will often advance a better mort-
