Sergeant Barry C. Smith of the
local Police Department. had a. nar-
row escape early yesterday morn-
ing on the Post Road near Wel-
sheit's Half Way Rouse when his
coat was brushed by a. speeding
automobile operated by Daniel
Sheehan of No. 181 West 11th Street
New York City. who was going at a
fast rate of speed in an effort to
avoid arrest on a charge of reckless
driving through the Naugatuck Val-
ley. where he struck an automobile.
completely demolishing it. barely
missed a traffic policeman in West-
port and gave the motorcycle po-
llc of Bridgeport a. merry chase
g the rue-in thoroughfares of that
city. He escaped them all until he
reached the city line where Sergeant
Smith and Policeman Matthew
Douglas were lying in wait for him.
Sergeant Smith. after narrowly
escaping serious injuries from the
speeding automobile. jumped into
the trusty police fllvver and pur-
sued the driver for half a. mile, ‘fin-
ally overtaking him at the point of
8- gun near Lockwood Avenue. Shee-
han had lied enough and he Willing-
ly followed the police automobile
to Headquarters where he was de-
tained until the police authorities
from Shelton came after him.

A crowd estimated at between 15.-
000 and 20.000 attended the avia-
tion meet at Rye Beach. N. 12, yes-
terday given under the auspices of
the Roger Air Line Company, it
was expected that a number of
Nay planes would be assigned to
the meet and that they would take
part in aerial maneuvers but it was
explained to the crowd that the.

ton, L. 1.. who did not. find the going
too rough to essay the trip across

company under the direction of
which the meet was held. also won

taken up by the machines during
the day .

tonous moments. The baseball team
under the leadership of Thomas L.
Page won a. close game from. Cap-
tsln Justus J. Fonnel's nine. The
score was 1-1 to 13.
The three-logged race was won
by the team of Albin B. Salmoneon
and. Ephraim .A. Goodln. This was
an interesting contest1 affording
many spills and much laughter. The
so ya rd dash and relay race of Span-
ish “731‘ Veterans was won by the
team captained by John B. Quinn
against the team headed by Charles
F. Beck. These venerable veterans
displayed .1 great deal of fighting
spirit during the contest.
Roger “7. French carried off first
honors in the broad Jump and Justus
J. Fennel won the shot put event.
These contests were followed by the
chow and short. talks on the Amer-
ican Legion by Charles 1". Beck.
