polo ponies owned by the Prince of
Wales and which were ridden in the
International polo games were
among a string of 44 sold at auction
yesterday at East Williston. The
Princes ponies brought 818. 000.
Two ponie- owned by Lord Wim-
borne. who was the chief supporter
or the British polo team's trip to
this cuntry but who sailed before the
opening of the International match.
were sold for a total of 821.000.

ed to American and the others to the
British lead.
The auction lot. was crowded with
the hunting and polo playing setalof
Long Island as the ponies were sold.

American teams taking part in the
match also were present.
"Lady Pat" brought the highest
price of all the Prince's string of
ponies, being bought by R. H. Hass-
ler for 83.600. The prices and the
purchasers of the other ponies own-
ed by the Prince were: "Pynieside

Officer Believes Cops
Are Bootleggers
GREENWICH. Sept. lit—Work-
ing on the strength of a tip that a
large load of liquor was being un-
loaded opposite Byram Park. a
squad 0! policemen set out at 3
o'clock yesterday morning from
headquarters to investigate As they
neared the park in two automobiles.
they saw two automobiles stealing
along in the moonlight closely tol-
lowcd by three large trucks.
The police stopped their cars in
the center of the street and ordered
the truck drivers to stop. The boot-
legsers answered this demand by
bringing up the roar guard and sur-
rounding thc two police machines.
Before the officers could move their
automobiles. they found themselves
hemmed in by four large cars which
held them while the three trucks
sped of! in dlflerent directions.
The drivers in ,thc automobiles
ignored the assertions that they
were under arrest for interierrimz
with the police and after the trucks

The police started in pursuit nnd
succeeded in o rtaking the two
trucks. but the third truck could
not. be found. The two drivers. Ar-

Brooklyn. N. Y.. were arrested and

Residents of Weed. McCloud, Dun-
smuir and other communities in this
vicinity felt considerable anxiety to-
day as a result of a cave—in and
landslide on Mount Shasta yesterday
when approximately 15 cres ot the
saurtace or the southeastern slope
crashed down into mud creek can-
yon. flooding the countryside with
mud and rocks.
The landslide caused the collapse
’0: the walls of mud creek canyon
for a distance of eight miles.
Mount .Shasta. although of vol-
canic formation. has long been
quiescent. The mountain is one of
the largest in the United states. Its
altitude is 14. 380 feet. It is one of
the Sierra Nevades and located in
central northern California about

line.
