Graff. 72 years old. of 3:30 \Vcst 107th street. .manui’acturer of radio cabinets and a. prominent Mason. was found in a sealed metal box in the basement of his shop at 81 West Twelfth Street. Mr. Graft had been missing since August 1. Failed with an ax whiéh the police found on the premises, with bits of hair still clinging to it. a cord had been tightly drawn about his neck to make death absolutely cer- tain. Then the slayer. using the ex and a saw had se'vered the legs of the murdered man so as to make is possible to cram the body into the metal box. Every effort to disfigure the body so as to make identification impos- sible had been made by the slayer. but, despite the gushes he had in- flicted on the face and body. friends were able to 'mnke a positive identi- fication of it this afternoon. Immediately thereafter. a wide search was begun for John Legacy of 81 West Twelfth Street. with whom Mr. Graft Was in the busi- ness of manufacturing radio cabi- nets. and who disappeared on August 9, eight days after Graff’s disappearance. . Saw Graft on Aug. 1. The police learned yesterday that Graft had an appointment with Logasy. a Hungarian. on August. I. the day on which the former dis- appeared. Although Logasy before he him- self disappeared told the police that Mr. Graft, who was notoriously punctiiious about his appointments, had failed to keep the appointment, the police were told by Edward Pat- terson. in the van business in the building on West Twelfth Street, that he saw Graft enter the build- ing that day. Soon after receiving this informa- tion the police found another important witness in the person of Christian Rohwer. a. man who had worked for Legacy, who swore that he had seen Graft and Loguy w- gether on August 1, though the latter had denied this.
