tiers.
Generally speaking, the state-
ments made, with respect to audio
amplifier coupling methods may be
duplicated more or less entirely for
radio amplifiers. Except for the
necessary changes in inductance
values in the case of the choke coil
and transformer couplings the same
systems as were described for audio
amplifiers are used for radio fre-
quency amplification.
In Fig. 1 is shown a resistance
coupled radio frequency amplifier.
In connection with audio amplifica-
tion yesterday we mentioned that
the resistance method had only one
advantage. that is, it amplified even~
ly over the audio range. In short
wave radio frequency amplification
it loses even the advantage of am-
plification. because resistance-coup-
led radlo frequency amplifiers do not
begin to show any really worthwhile
amplification until they are used for
wavelengths above 1.000 meters. At
300.500 meters the amplification is
almost nil.
In addition. owing to the presence
of the "protective" condensens C
and C-1 between each stage. there
yls a possibility of partial detection
occurring in the amplifier itself sev-

operate more than one stage with

Under the heading of the choke
coil amplifier we will mentlen the
superdyne circuit. which is simply
an impedance coupled amplifier with
a reverse tickler for controlling os-
cillation. Despite exaggerated claims
sometimes made for the superdyne
it will be found generally to be
superior to a properly operated
simple tuned choke amplifier. as
illustrated in Fig. 2.
As with the audio amplifier. trans-
former coupling is the most satis-
factory mcans of coupling radio fre-
quency stages. But where in the
audio transformer we had only the'
iron-core. broadly-tuned transform-

tem as the neutrodyne system to
stabilize the amplifier and keep it
from oscillating when the successive
stages are tuned to resonance.
If the neutrodyne arrangement is
used. however. it is a good policy
to leave the stage next to the detec-
tor "un-neutralised.” as described
in previous articles. so that the full
benefits of regeneration may be se-
cured.
