WASHINGTON. July 29.-——With-
drawal of the revolutionary forces
from Sao Paulo and the occupatioh
of that city by Briziilan Government
forces was announced yesterday in
advices received by the State depart-
ment. ,
The Department‘s advices were
based upon dispatches from the ad-
miral commanding the Brazilian
naval forces which said all Ameri-
cans in Sao Paulo were found to be
safe when the city awas taken ove
by the Government forces. .-

the Brazilian Government forces
have taken Sao Paulo. says a. dis-
patch to La. Naciou from Santos.

The Rio Janeiro correspondent of
La Naclon reports that the Jornni do
Commercio. the Brazilian Govern-
ment organ. has posted a placard in
front of its offices in Rio. declaring
that the Sao Paulo revolutionlsts
abandoned the city yesterday morn-
ing and fled toward the interior.
leaving the entire city of Sao Paulo
in the hands of the Government for-
ces.
The placard declared the revolu-
tlonlsts abandoned the city after
strong pressure by the legal forces
and tie dtoward the interior with
two reduced columns in special
trains. The bulletin added that Gen.
Azevedo Costa was in possession of
the city of Itu. about forty miles
southwest of Soa. Paulo. and that he
would prevent the escape of the re-
bel forces. .

Recovers His Speech
SPRING LAKE, N. 3., July 29.—
The successful performance of two
unusual operations in which a. sec-
tion of a. man's shinbone was psed
to fill a hole in his skull with the
subsequent recovery of his speech,
was announced at the Ann May hos~
pita! today. ‘ .
The patient, John Hansen, lo. of
Manasquam, a year ago Was struck
on the head by a policeman in ar-
resting him for being drunk. A sec-
tion of Hansen's fractured skull as
large as a. half a. dollar piece was
removed last October after the in-
jury had caused him to lose pow-
er of speech. Following this Hansen
partially recovered his speech but

cided that pressure on the spot was
preventing complete recovery. Last
week the section of the shinbono
and a. section of fat tissue from Han-

The special American torpedo
boat destroyer division. under
command of Commander Russell
Willson, which is on its way north-
ward to give assistance to the Am-
erican Round-thc-W’orld fliers in
their jump from Greenland to Lab-
rador next month, will leave here
tomorrow and .go directly to Indian
Harbor, Labrador.
Route will be through Belle Isle
strait. in the waters of which yes-
twday there were reported to be
nine icebergs and many growlerl.-
It is expected that the destroyer!
soon will be in constant communi-
cation with the cruiser Milwaukee
which has reached Hawkes Bay.
New Foundland. and which soon
will proceed to Indian Harbor.
The destroyers will remain in In-
dian Harbor until word comes from
the cruiser Richmond indicating the
time of the departure of the avia-
tors from Soaps. Flow. when they
will go on patrol stations between
Indian Harbor and Greenland. Com-

mer lesson in New York is a frost.
This unhappy situation is due in a
large measure to the last Demo-
cratic National Convention. and
what may not be so chargeable. is
credited to the actors and the man-
agers who have been making faces
at each other over the closed shop
proposition for some time past.
Strange as it may seem, the late cons
vention actually killed the theatres
in this city. The delegates were too
busy developing a. deadlock and wit—
nessing the natural sights of New
York to to tn the play, and the na-
tives of thc'c'ity. inferring that the
delegates were filling the houses, re—
mained away. So between the two
the manager was obliged to omit at
least one caviar course in his daily
lunch. '
New York is given to new and in-
teresting experiments, but this week
something brand new will be tried
out by Edwin Franko Goldman.,con—
ductor of the Goldman Band, and
that munical organization. Nine
bands made up of boys have entered
a contest for the supremacy in first
field of music. Prizes are given for
the three leaders, and already New
Yorkers seeking novelty are getting
ready to enjoy I treat. One can
build a highly imaginative picture of
these nine bands. mado'bp of from
25 to 50 members each, playing in
competition. They will first
"The Pioneer." a march composed
by Mr. Goldman himself, and then
excerps from "Faust." It will be
on these two compositions that their
merits will be judged. The finale
will be a ma-cd band rendition of
Mr. Goldman's "The Pioneer." It‘
is as original as it promises to prove
interesting.
. Filmdom is interested in the ad-
vent of Lincoln J. Carter, the mas-
ter of melodrama, in this new field.
Years ago Mr. Carter was the most
prolific writer of melodramas, thir-
ty-six having been written and pro~
duced by himself. These were the
days of primitive thrills. and in this
extended catalogue were some of the
gripping effects of the period. Mr,
Carter's pre-eminency in this field
has never ben successfully challen-
ged. and when some of his biggest
successes ware screened—such as
“The Past Mall." "The Eleventh
Hour.“ Bedfords Hope." “Two Little
Waits." and others-it was decided
to bring to the screen his entire list.

Robert Gilbert Welsh. drama crit-
ic on the New York “Telegram-
Mail" met death by drowning in
Bermuda last week. Mr. Welshhas
been, for 18 years, a. foremost dram-
atic critic, and one of the most im-
partial. intelligent and likable by all'
persons interested in the stage of
any member of the FOurth Estate.
His death was a shock to thousands
of actors and hundreds of others in
stagedom as well. His writings have
been cgpicd by drama editors
throughout the United States.
