The Sao Paulo uprising is not an
ordinary South American rebellion.
A real tempest has brewed in the
"world's coffee pot."
More than three thousand among
both troops and civilians already
have been killed. and the tempest
remains unabated.
This is no comic opera rebellion,
with every other soldier a general.
Big guns, airplanes. the methods
of modern warfare are being used.
Sao Paulo is in rebellion against
the federal government of Brazil
in an effort to secede from the na-
tion and form a new Republic. It
is indicated that these endeavors
are meeting with some success. but
so far the states are officially loyal.
Trouble is EconOnlic.
The three states Sao Paulo wants
for partners in the new republic
are Santa Catharina. a progpcroue
farming district with coal deposits:
Rio Grandc do Sul. livestock and
wheat center; and Pal-an. with the
only pine timber in Brazil. Their
area takes up the southern wing of
the country.
There are :0 states in Brazil. Al-
though most Americans do not
know it. Brazil is larger in area
than the I.'nited States. Of these
states Sun Paulo is the richest and
most highly developed, to an extent

Sao Paulo yearly produces about
70 per cent of the world's supply
of coffee and generally reaps a huge
profit in the process. The city of
Sao Paulo. the capitol. is a manu-
facturing center of'more than 600.-
000, whose factories turn out all
manner of goods from cotton cloth
to ready-made clothing and from
wire nails to farm machinery. There
is also a growing cattle industry.
Costly Patriotism.
This prosperity has naturally
caused it to bear an increasing
share of the taxrs necessary for
support of the federal government
at Rio de Janelro. The southern
states have little interest in tho af-
fairs of those farther north. except
the interest inspired by patriotism.
They appear to feel their patriotism
is costing them too much.
This is the third insurrectionary
movement in Brazil in the last three
years, but it is entirely distinct in
character from the others. The
revolution which smoldcred through
most of last year in the state of Rio
Grande do Sul was at attempt to
overthrow the existing state govern-
ment. The revolution of 1923 was
aimed at the federal government
itself. but its objective was the over~
throw of the government of Dr.
Epitacio da Silva. Pessoa, then presi-
dent of the republic.
Sao Paulo. the radius of the re-
bellion is one of the most beautiful
cities in South America. It is not-
able for its varied architecture.
ranging from chalet types. Moorish
palaces and buildings of the French
Renaissance period to modern ot-
fice structures.

campaign for the governorship. but
