How many people realize that the
Roma Point. Volunteer Live Saving
Corps is fourteen years old.
Composed of thirty members of
whom twenty are in active service
during the entire summer season.
the corps was organized in 1910, long
before Neville Baylcy took over the
park.
A; one time the bathing houses
“ere run by John Snellback who
died in 1910. It was immediately
after Mr. Snellbuck's death that the
Volunteer Life Saving Corps came
into csistencc taking over the bath-
ing houses which they successfully
run until the present lessee took
charge of the park.
Many of the original organizers
are still members of the corps. Prob-
ably the one with the widest repu-
tation is Clifford H. Bencdlck. bet-
lcr known as "Hop." _was retained
ever since.
Mr: Bencdlck has a reputation of
a long distance swimmer. lie holds
manyrecords having swam. llell
Gate, winning a. long distance swim
from tllc Battery to Concy Island:
and of the nine ’niilc swim from
Yonkers to lnwood Beach.
Many a. person holds a special
place in his heart for “Hop." “When
it comes to the life saving end of his
Job. he has pulled scores out of the
water who were in danger of drown-
ing. As recorded in the Sentinel. he
pulled a man out or the water Thurs-
day afternoon.
"Hop." is pri‘ :y bashful when it
comes to talking for publication.
“it isn't what I have done," said
"Hop.“ "that 1 think of. But sup—
pose I happen to fail to see a per-
son in trouble in the water! “'e
haven‘s had a drowning at the point
since the corps was established and
I would sure hate to see anything
like that. happen. I often wonder
how in the world I have noticed. as
I have in several cases, the heads of
drowning swimmers disappear un-
der the water. And I often think
”suppose I hadn't seen them.’ "
There are other long distance
swimmers in the corps. There is
Joseph Corcoran and \Villlam Byx-
bee. Patrolman Paul McGrath is
another member.
The Life Saving Station at the
west side of the bathing beach was
erected by the corps during the first
year Mr. Bayley took over the point.
The expenseqwero paid by members
of the organization.
At the present time. members of
the corps are thinking seriously of
getting together with the idea of
holding a water field day during the
latter part of the summer season. A
special meeting for this purpose is
to be held soon.

pavilion for the remainder of the
