Yesterday attracted many resi-
dents to the beach. The East Beach
was dotted with bathers as was
Crescent Beach. Islanders rested up
yesterday after a strenuous week-
end. Every evening since Thursday
has just been a busy one. On
Thursday evening. the eve of In-
depsndence day. there was the form-
at" opening dance. That lasted until
almost 1: a m. It was an early get
up on the next morning. the Fourth.
There was noise a plenty. Fire-
crackers. pistols and everything.
Then there were athletic events in
the afternoon and the fireworks in
the evening. Saturday also was
. eventful. Guests were entertained

It was a big night at the [2. ll
Island club Saturday. The celebra~
tion on the Fourth of July or the
dance on Thursday evening did not
dim the spirits of the islanders any.
They came out strong for Saturday
evening‘s affair. 300 strong. The
Ca ce was a huge success. There
were many out-of-town guests in at-
tendance'who commended the event
and who praised the officials for the
success. A special augmented or-
chestra supplied the music and met
hearty approval. The features of
the evening were the vaudeville acts
obtained direct from the B. F.
Keith booking offices in New York
city. There were three singing and
dancing skits which provided enter-
tainment of the best quality. The
islanders applaused greatly and de-
manded a great many encores. The
prize winners of the events which
were held at the island on the Fourth
on July ,were give; their rewards by
the executive of the Fourth program
Frederick W. Houston. Amid great
ovations and applause the winners
took their trophies. There was
special recognition made of Billy
Ortiz who won the biggest prize for
his flashy finish in the motor boat
race. A large loving cup was given
him. \‘crnon Jarboe received-great
aeclamations for his able showing in
the dizzy race. In this event the
contestants were obliged to run
around a post 7 times and then to
run straight ahead to their goal.
The attempts were humorous. A
fmv ran into the water. Other ran
into the crowds who were lined along
the beach. Mr. Jarboe. the hero.
made a straight line, with few varia-
tions for the goal. The prize is
still .1 mystery. “hot is it? “'here
is it? and What has )ir. Jarboe done
with it? They were all mum when
asked about it. He said he was
