though she introduced the reporter
and Tinhey to each other. Miss “'11.
son testified. Tinney immediately

it. insisting that the man was not
a reporter but n. friend of hers.
Credentials Ignored
When Tinney persisted in his
statements.— lilies \Vilson said. she
instructed her mold to~ call up the
newspaper office to confirm her
statements. and the reporter ot-
fcred to show Tinney his credentials.
In spite of these credentials and a
telephone message confirming them
from the office. Tinney continued
in his refusal to believe her state-
ment. Miss “’lison said.
The reporter thereupou apologized
to both herself and Tinney. she said.
and suggested that it would be bet—
ter if he left. After he had gone.
the witness declared, Tinney turned
on her and kicked her on the instep.
He then dragged her by the hair
into the.kitchen. she declared. and
there knocked her down by a blow
on the head. He then sat on her
body and struck her repeatedly on
the back until she bled from the
nose and month, according to the
girl's testimony. As silo felt her
strength ebbing away from her. she
said. she called for her colored maid.
shouting, “For God‘s nice. don't let
him kill me!" Tinney then turned on
her maid and struck her. she de-
clared. This she said to he the last
thing she. remembered before lapslng
into unconsciousness.
Goes Out
When she revived some time later
Miss Wilson said that she took off
her own suit. put on Tinney’s street
clothes, that he‘hsd taken oil earlier
and went. out of the apartment. hir-
ing a tznicnb to take her to the
newspaper officefsome five miles
distant. There. she said. she told the
story of the alleged assault and re.
turned to her apartment. accompan-
ied by a member of the staff of the
newspaper. At 5 a.rn.. she said. the
two ejected Tinney from the spart-
ment.
Miss Wilson. looking much more
vigorous than she had looked on the
occasion of her last. appearance in
court. made an excellent witness. On
cross examination by attorneys for
Tinney she frequently displayed gaps
in her memory or refused to answer,
questions'on the ground that they
would tend to incriminate or de~
grade her. .
Cross examination brought from
Miss, Wilson her own version of a
recent visit to the Tlnney home at
Beidwtn. L. I. On reaching her
apartment one night a little after
midnight. the said. she received a
telephone call from 'I‘inney asking
her to come to Baldwin.
She wasaccustomed to obey Tin-
ney's slightest requests without quea-
tlon. she testified. and left in a taxi-
cab summoned by Bobby Grey. Tin-
ney's negro dresser.
When she arrived at the Tlnney
home. she said. the pic:- was dark.
Bobby Grey entered the house and
turned on the lights; and she herself
entered the house and found Mrs.
.Tinney.
