made bread. of garden fruits turned
into delicious jam by the farmer's
wife. of cake fresh from the oven.
of thick cream and golden butter.
,, And the returned Englishman had
1, dreamed also. I fancy. of some pink
f; checked comely daughter of the
" house busy about the service of
strangers.
The dream ended when we were
given by a. London waitress in high
heels an indiflerent mm! of shop
'bread, mass production cakes and
milk which had been speedily div-
orced from cream.
Country meals are becoming more
like town meals each year. Yet for
the laborer's wife. for the wife DI.
the struggling tenant farmer, there
is unrealized commercial value in
the old fashioned country food is as
much a joy to the townswoman as
is a day in London with its restau-
rant delights to the woman of the

I cannot believe that our country
women have forgotten how to cook.
that in this land of ours. with its
tradition of fine domestic craft. its
beautiful old farmhouses. its village
of beloved homes. women no longer
bake bread. preserve? fruit. make
cakes and scones and deep 1am
