at Sir Richard Squires. tamer pre-
mier of New Foundiand, resulted in
his arrest. Among other accusations.
the former premier is charged with
having accepted large sums of
money from a. steel company with
which the government was negotia-
ting about ore taxes. Squires denies
the allegations and asserts he will
run for re—election as premier.
As the inquiry proceeded, it was
brought out that Squires's personal
business interests became chaotic
and that money diverted trom gov-
ernment funds was used in an effort
to meet his personal notes.

tific interest and otters rare oppor-
tunity for research and study.

ed with its luxurious growth. The
timber is virgin. consisting of. bal-
sam. fir and spruce in heavy stands.
There is a sparing stand or red or
Norway. pine. Poplar. birch and
hard maple abound on the high-
lands. There is practically no clear-
ed land on the entire island and few
evidences oi forest fires.
Birds’ and Bessts’ Haven.
"It is tiie habitat of a herd‘ of
moose estimated conservatively at
eighteen hundred. in addition to be-!
ing the home and breeding rangev
of approximately four hundred
woodland caribou. The only sharp
tailed grouse found in Michigan are
confined to this area. Isle Royale
is the breeding range or innumer-
able wild t'owl. migratory, send and
inscctivorous birds. aid, gulls and
terns. There are twenty-one inland
lakes and several splendid swift-flow
ing tro‘ut streams in the interior. In
addition to the main island. there
are about one hundred smaller Is-
lands. ranging in area from one acre
to 330 acres.
"The island at present is acces-
sible from Duluth and from Bough-
ton, Mich. by steamers running
twice - weekly. There are tour
groups or summer resorts on Isle
Royale, one at the extreme westerly
end in Washington Harbor, one in
Duncan't Day on the northeast coast
and the other two at Tobin's Harbor
and Rock Harbor at the extreme
