Storrs that the people of \Vestport
favored the trolley ears and not the

people voted in favor of having the
tracks removed and establishing a.
bus line. Prof. Ayer spoke regard-
ing the plight of the selectmen in

situation as it is today. After niuch
argument between Jennings. Ray-
mond, Nash. Ayers. Gair, and Mans-
field. the matter was brought to a.
vote. A vote by ballot was called
for 'and Frank Raymond. George
Gair and Charming Harris were ap-
pointed tellers. 124 votes were cast,
87 for the bus line and 27 against
it. 63 Votes were necessary for a
choice. The meeting then adjourn-
ed. It was hinted after the meeting
that Mr. Raymond would endeavor
to call another meeting to attempt
to rescind the vote taken last even-
ing.

CHAPTER XI.
Evelyn was lying in bed. feeling
luxuriantly restful. when she heard
the bell of the front door ringing.
She felt a. delicious satisfaction in
knowing that she did not have to get
up and answer it. She thought of
the days when the iceman. the mill:-
innn. the huekster. the grocer's boy
and a. thousand and one other things
were in s. conspiracy, it seemed. to
jungle her nerves and make rest in
the morning impossible.
Hannah appeared at the door.
“Mis’ Jille is heah." she said. as
if resentful at being interrupted.
Evelyn wondered what Fred's
mother could want at: such an early
hour—9:30 in the morning seemed
only to her. Perhaps she wanted to
see Mamie. Mamie's fortune had
made her much sought by the family
at all hours.
"Doesn't she want to see Mamie 1’"
suggested Evelyn, "Isn‘t she in her
room?"
‘fMis’ Jille want to see you," was
the response.
“Tell her to come right in."
Evelyn propped herself up in bed
and picked up a. sewing basket from
a. small table at the bedside.
“Why, Mrs. Jille." she exclaimed
when the elder woman entered the
room. "Why didn’t you come right
in?" She held out her arms and
they embraced. Something in the
face of Fred's mother told her that
all was not well.
“Oh. I didn’t wt to disturb you
so early in the morning." Her
doughterdn-lnw detected the strain
of sarcasm in the utterance.
‘ “I felt so tired this morning that
I decided to stay in bed a while."
Evelyn tried to explain smiling.
“Hannah is marvelous at seeing to
things. you know."
The face of the elder woman was
immovable. "All young women are
tired mornings nowadays," she re-
marked. Then:
"Evelyn. I came to tell you that
I don't like your backing up Mabel
in this foolish affair of her’s." She
became angry. “I don’t want you
to tell her the things you do. She
is my daughter and I think I can
massage her without any advice from
others. You have gotten her in a
