for picnics. at Mansfield Center,
when Timothy McGillicuddy. 85. of
:39 Ash street. was drowned and Er-
nest Morse of “’hittemorc street. this

in the frigid waters and clinging to
broken ice. was rescued. The res-

Becker of 491 Jackson street. this
city. McGillicuddy's body was
brought to the surface at 12:15

ilcuddy perished in the attempt to

McGiliicuddy and Morse .started
from their homes shortly before 9:00“
o'clock to fish through the ice at
Town Pond. They had been at the
pond but a. few minutes when they
were joined by Becker. The trio
were the only ones on the. pond when
the tragedy occured. According to
Becker one tilt had been placed and
in walking about, Morse suddenly
stepped through the ice up to his
arm pits. He called for help and
Mcflillicuddy pulled off his over-
coat and threw it to Morse holding
one end. “'hen Morse grabbed the
coat. McGillicuddy slipped and went
through the ,ice close to Morse. and
did not come up to the surface pre-
sumably not being able to do so on

Becker saw that he could render
little assistance on acount of the poor
condition of the ice. He ran to the
home of George H. W'yman. the
nearest house. a quarter of 3 mile

Morse. who ‘was in an enfeebled
condition from his exposure was
hastily driven to the home of his
brother on “'hittcmpre street and
given treatment. He had fairly well
recovered from his experience this
evening.
The state police barracks was call-
ed and Officer Hulburt’ sent to the
scene. Two boats belonging to A. F.
Roswell were secured and with con-
siderable difficulty were slid part of
the way and the other part by break-
ing the iEe. to the spot where the
fatality occured.
