GROCERY MERGER
The advent or a. new year has
brought the unnpuncemcnt of a.
merger by which one of the tides!
and best known wholesale grocery
concerns in the East. with head-
quarters in Brooklyn. costs us lot
with another and still larger or-
ganization in the same line oi. busi-
ness, marking another step. it is
said. in the trade evolution v'lilch is
gradually bringing about ~etlc‘r con-
ditions for the buying public by way
of more improved methods [or coon-
omy of purchase and distiibutlon.
The firm of \Viliiaui B. A. .lurgcns,
established in Brooklyn in 1867. has
been merged with Francrs II. Leg-
gett &. Company of New York, the
transaction being- confirmed last
night by 'l‘. l". \Vhitniarsh. president
of the latter concern, who sass in
this development a step forward in
general service to the public.
In its 57 years of successful cper-
ntion the Jurgens firm has devoi-
opcd many brands and trademarks
for its products. all of which will be
retained by the new and enlarged
enterprise. Charles H. Bagel, prom-
inent in the management or the
Brooklyn house, joins the stat! of
the Leggett Company with his en-
tire sales force, so that: few if any
changes will be made in personnel
under the new management.
- In confirming this important mer-
ger. Mr. Whitmarsh said last night.
“The Francis H. Leggett Company is
well pleased to be joined by so old
and honorable a house as the Will-
. lam B. A. Jurgens concern. and we
entertain the hope that the com-
bination of interests, or purchasinx
and distributing power and study of
the needs of the public, will have a.‘
