WESTPORT. Dec. 28.——In its six
months of official existence the West-
port town court has tried a total of
approximately 154 cases. according
to the reckoning ct Prosecutor Ed-
ward B. Bradley. who will have. his
official report for the fiscal year
.within a day or two. A total of
between 82(00 and $2500 tines has
been collected by the court since it
was'instituted July 7. The majority
of oifenses tried have been motor ve-
hicle violations which constitute
about 70 or the total 164. Liquor
violations have not been so num-
erous as, might be expected. a total
of about 16 having been tried. Sev-
eral of these took appeals of were
bound over to the higher court. The
Jurisdiction of the local court is six
months in Jail and a $560 fine. Two
serious assault cascs which were
bound over to the higher court, from
part otsthe court record for the
Westpbrt people as well as law-
yers and the court attaches are
‘he operation of the
court. and in no way regret the
change from the old-time justicc's
court to a town court. For one
thing. which has been considered
the greatest advantage of the new
system. the court records are kept
completely and accurately by the
clear. In place of the justice sys-
tem which prevails in mail towns
and hamlets throughout the county.
and which resulted in as many as
seven justices. many timese utterly
unfamiliar with the provisions of
the law trying the same court in as
many different ways. and imposing
it! many different penalties. there is
now one town court with one Judge
justice system one Justice. either to
satisfy a personal grudge or to em-
phasise his authority would impose
a line wholly inconsistent with the
proportions of the crime or ottense.
