tablished by the Speed Wagon which
as a part of the official motor con-
voy tor the Pony Express Home!

company. raced 2270 miles across
the Country without having .is en-
ginc stopped.
-During 220 consecutive houvs.the
engine of the Speed Wagon continu-
ed its steady hum and during that
period it. was necessary to feed it
only five quarts of oil. This Is a re-
markable record in itself. but when
the running conditions are known. it
seems all the more remarkable for
the almost insurmountable obstacles
whlcli were overcome.
The Speed Wagon with which the
record was made was taken directly
from the assembly line in 'the big
Reo shops at Lansing, Michigan.
and shipped‘the same day to St.
Francisco branch, who drove the
of the Pony Express run. It arrived
in St. Joseph less than'24 home be.
fore the scheduled starting time of
the trip to San Francisco. had only
such preparatory service as co-1!d be
given at that late hour. and started
on the long Journey after having
been driven only seven miles.

W'hen the fleet of new 1924 Oak-
land cars was sent out early in
September from the factory at Pen-
tiac to all sections of the couiitry to
the v3hicl’e from exceeding a. cor-tan. demonstrate the four-wheel brakes
and otn’er safety features. no particu-‘
lar stress was placed on the special
blue satin wax body finish which is a
distinct feature of all Oakland open
models.
But is has been found that after
the "True Blue Travelers" had gone
through mud-spattered roads ,even
thick gumbo, all that was necessary
to give the cars a new appearance
was to rub off the mud with a. dry
cloth.
The special paint on the Oakland
bodies is the most recent develop-
n nt for automobile use and poses-
cs remarkable properties ot-duribil-
ity. The body may be cleaned with
a dry. or oily cloth, or washed in the
regular way. The satin wax finish
which is rubbed on over the paint is
improved by rubbing or polishing
so that as the cars are used the
attain an. even smoother gloss. The
finish is not easily scratched. does
not check and is not affected by
sun or rain.
Another feature of interest to
owners 'is the fact that if the body
is marred or dentecfin any way. all
that is necessary after the dent is
"bumped out” is to have, the Oak-
land dealer spray with s. special
paint gun just the spot that has been
marred. The. paint blends together
without leaving a trace of whens
the damaged spot appeared. This is
impossible on a. varnish finish Job
as it is usually necessary to repaint
and varnish a whole panel or section
of the car.
The ease and rapidity with .whlch
this mush may be cleaned has not
only been demonstrated by the “True
Blue Travelers." but also by many
these models have been subjected
to literal hind-slinging all day to
prove that the mud is easily remov-
ed with a dry cloth and that it does
not harm the finish in any way.
