There are two principle things to
be varied in a motor generator.
The frequency of the generator is
varied by means of the motor field
rheostat and the voltage of the gen-
erator by the generator field rheo-
stat.
A field rhoostat, while much
larger. works on the principle of
the ordinary filament rheostat. The
more resistance you cut out the
more current flows through the cir-
cuit. One form of thisirheostae is
resistance wire wrapped on a. root»
angular piece of slate with a slider
arranged to make contact with the
turns similar to a slider rod on a
tuning coil.
Motor generators used for radio
work are protected from high fre-
quency voltages that now in radio
circuits. The isulation of the wind-
ings of the motor generator are not
designed to carry current of high.
voltage and frequency. These stray
currents always take the shortest
path to ground and in so doing my
puncture the windings of the arms-
ture in trying to get to the ground
via the shaft and base of the motor
or generator. One way of protect-
ing this wiring is to install all the
connections in metal conduit and
then ground it. Another is to con-
nect two. one-halt microfsrad con-
densers in series. connecting the
two outer ends to the line to be
protected and the center one is
grounded. This device is shown at
x. It will allow the high fre-
quency high voltage currents to
now through it to earth but will
not allow the low voltage low fro
qucncy currents to get through.
Another device known as a proteo
