Have you ever wondered how a
key can be made to a: the locks
of one hundred rooms in a hotd.
when the, key to each individual,
room will not fit' any other. lock?
At the Lockwood Manufacturing
company one learns the intricate
workings of a master key and Just
why it will fit any lock.
the factory for years and years .ds~
monstrated by assamblying the parts
of a.master key together. First. there
is a cylinder made of brass. and
there are five little holes on its
susface: flicn there is a latch bolt
with a spring riveted onto it and
fastened at one end by a "washer,"
which is simply a round piece of
steel fitting over the tall piece of
the latch and holding the spring in
position. This washer must fit roa-
sonabiy close so thitthe‘ spring will
not slip—if it is an expansion spring.
it must not spread too much. and if
it. is a compression spring. it' must
not contract too'rnuch;
Then there are five tiny disks. or
regular pins. and one is dropped into
one of the five holes. by means of,
pinchers. All five disks having been
fitted into the holes. next comes
five little driving pins which am
also placed Into the holes. Next
come live little springs. one placed in
each of the five holes; these springs
drive the pins down into the lock.
and finally there is a cap laced on
top to hold the three layers of disk 3
pida."and springs in. It is hammered
down tight. And a “cam" will now
turn the latch bolt and it "works".
