Surveys. reported by dealers and retail associations throughout the country, indicate that fall prospects for both cars and trucks are better than last year. Tn Georgia. Illinois. Michigan. Nebraska. and parts of the Northwest August business was reported as better than July though in the majority of the states the do- mand was reported as slightly less. The increased production was 6.7 per cent over July and 28 per cent in excess of August 922. Last year the August increase ver the pre- ceding month was 10. per cent. Six economy runs made August 1 in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut indicates that this car is unusually thrifty on gaso- line consumption. The test run was originated by the Bollinger-Orteig Company, .New York City distributors for Dort cars. Bollinger-Orteig reported that 8. STATE HIGHWAY IS COMPLETED After more than a year's effort. the state highway department has completed repairs on the New Hart- i'ord-winsted highway that has agreeably surprised users of the road in this section. The marked im- provement that has been made on this trunk line highway has brought hbout a line trunk line road which is the most direct route to Pittsiield and the Berkshires from the center of the state. it is one of the most important thoroughfares in the state as it carries a. large volume of traf- i‘lc from eastern and central Con- nccticut to western Masachusetts. The alternate route has been by way of Farmington. Bristol. Thomas- ton. Torrington and “'insted and be-i yond. a much longer trip. which has now been obviated by completion of the repairs. The road has been widened. there- by making travel much safer. and numerous dangerous curves which made the highway unpopular as well as unsafe. have been eliminated. In additiom‘there will no longer be any danger of motorists experiencing trouble due to the gutters alongside the roadway. With the extension of this road to take care of conditions between \Vin- sted and Norfolk. the traveling pub- lic will be relieved of much of the uncertainty which annually existed in the late fall, winter and early spring when this highway was all but impassable. No such trouble is ex- pected in the future. All the turns have been banked and additional shoulders five feet in width constructed throughout the length of the improvement. This necessitated the rebuilding of all ex- isting drainage structures and cul- verts. Several miles of new railing have also been installed. The main trouble had been lack of propervdrainage. where certain sec- tions. during extreme Weather con- ditions. became absolutely impass- able. It is the intention of the high- way department to further extend these modern improvements toward Norfolk for about four miles. It is an improvement that has long been awaited. The spare suffers from these more than the tires on the car in most cases. After washing the car it is advisable to go over the rims with graphite or stove polish to prevent rust. Cold water and soap or gasoline should be used to seem- a casing. which has become covered with oil or grease.
