has had the newspaper framed and
is exhibiting it. together with an in-
teresting collection of old coins pnd

The Norwalk Gazette was start-
ed in May. 1800. by a Mr. Picket
who came here trorn Danbury. The
paper was printed on n Ben Frami-
iin wooden press. In 1818 the Gazeltt;
was purchased by Rosncl Nichols
and Phllo Price. It later came into
the possession or the Byington enmi-

new been a model newspaper in its
day. its form would loudly up;
public of today. For the paper was
was sadly lacking in what is known
as "local news." This particular issue
in Mr. Byxbee's possession is tor the
most part. tilled with the 'correepond-
ence between Commodore Stephen
Decatur and Commodore James Bar-
ron-which led to an “unfortunate
meeting on the 22nd at March." The
newspaper simplicity in the matter
of plain, every-day English and
compact and brief sentences are so
long drawn out that by the time
the end or them is reached. the. sub-
ject matter in the first part or the
sentence is forgotten.
Advertising in 1820 was just es
popular as it is today. The issue 0!
the paper is practically hail? filled
with advertisements. In one ad.
