In the possession of Fred. S.
Byxbco, proprietor of the Benedict
Nous company. \V all street, is copy
of the old Norm-slit Gazette. which
is one hindred and three years old.
The paper is dated Norn'alk. \Ved-
ncsdny, April 26, 1820. Mr. Byxbee
has had the.ncwspapor framed and
is exhibiting it. together with an in-

. tel-eating collection of old coins and
‘paper money. in the window or hisi

The Norwaik Gazette was start-t
ed in May. 1500. by a Mr. Picket;
who came here from Danburr. The
paper was printed on is Ben Frank-
lin wooden press. In 1518 the Gazette
was purchased by Rosnet Nichols
and Pluto Price. It later came into
the possession oi the Byington lamb
iy.

day. its form would loudly appeal to
public of today. For the paper was
was scaly lacking- in what is known
as "local news." This particular issue
in Mr. Byxbec's passeaslon is for the
most part filled with the «correspond-
enco between Commodore Stephen
Decatur and Commodore James Bar-
ron which led to an "unfortunate
meeting on the 23nd of March." The
newspaper simplicity in the matter
at plain, every-day English and
compact and brie! sentences are so
long drawn out that. by the time
the end or them is reached. the sub-
ject matter In the first part 0! the
sentence is torgotten.
Advertising in 1820 was just as
popular as it is today. The “$101)!
the paper is practically halt filled
with advertisements. In one °ad.

offered to pay a reward or six cents
"(or the return 0! an indentured ap-
prentice to the shoemaking business
named Charles Sceley. aged
about 18 years, small or his
age. black hair and dark com-
plexion." Mr. Chichester \solcmnly
warned the public, however, that
all persons were forbidden to har-
bor or trust the runaway as he
would not. pay any expense that the
latter might incur.
Another advertisment announces

tween Norwelk and Danbury by way
features found in no other furnace, less fuel,
