The dialogue is continued until the
sly Punch gets possession of the stick
again. sneaks to a position behind
Scarnmouch "and. with a violent blow.
knocks his head clean oi! his should-
ers."
' Punch calls Judy and when she
[appears "kieses her. while she hits
him a slap in the face." The smooth
Punch requests Judy to bring "the
child." She does so and Punch-rocks
the baby, singing:
"0. rcst'thee. my baby,
Thy daddy is here:
Thy mommy's a gaby.
And that's very clear."
Although Punch pretends to be
aflectionato he finally becomes im-
patient with the child's crying. First
he boxes the baby's ears. then "strikes
the child's head several times against
the side of the stage.’ Punch says.
“Howl’do you like that? i thought
that would stop your equalling. Get
siong with you. nasty naughty. crying
child." According to stage directions
' "Punch throws is over the front of the
stage among the spectators." He
laughs and rings as it nothing had
happened.
Punch Kills Bis Wile.
Judy comes in to remonstrate. She
calls her husband “a cruel wretch."
goes out and gets a big stick and from
{behind "hits Punch a sounding blow
on the back of the head. before he is
aware." Punch and Judy engage in a
bitter quarrel and in the end Punch
ruthlessly does away with her by
“following up his blows until she is
lifeless."
Then comes the scene between Polly
the daughter of Scaramouch. who
comes to avenge her father's death.
Punch pretends he killed Searamouch
because the latter would not allow him
to wed her. Polly believes hlm and
they dance togtlher and she exits
happily. confident Punch is in love
with her.
Punch gets his horse on which he
intends to ride to Polly's home. but
the horse gallops and Jumps and final-
.13! Punch is thrown. A doctor comes
‘in response to Punch's call and while
the doctor is examining Punch the
latter kicks him in the eye. There is
a rough and tumble fight until "the
doctor falls down dead. and Punch.
as before. tosses away the body with
the end of. his stair."
The next to meet death at the hsndl
of Punch is “a servant- in s. foreign
livery" who brings the complaint oi
his master that ”he no like dat noise.”
