The public hearing before the
Board of Finance was rather a quiet
affair, I’itfh an undercurrent of rath-
er bitter feeling.‘ The meeting was
called by members of the "I'omen‘s
Town Improvement association to
discuss the garbage disposal ques-
tion. The women presented their case
clearly. and conclusively proved the
need“ garbage removal as s. public
health necessity. The women who
spoke on the subject were Mrs. John
Crawford. Mrs. Gunion. Mrs. Rollin
G. Sherwood. There wero many ar-
guments from the male taxpayers.
Among those who favored the move
were Harry R. Sherwood. Austin
\V'akeman. Frank Cribari and Homer
Beers. Many others spoke on the
subject or asked uuestions regarding
it. Those opposing the garbage col-
lection at,tlle expense of the‘ town
were ‘E. M. Jennings. George Fair and
William Burr of the Board of Fi-
nance. Mr. Grout proposed a house
to house canvass to be sure that 60
per cent. of the people favored the
project. Mr. VVakeman and Mr. Cri-
barl explained the situation in San-
gatuck. and Mrs. Rollin G. Sherwood
read a copy ' of the ordinance by
which the health officer could force
