Johnny Dundee has at last achieved a lifelong ambition.
He left the
ring here in the home of the New York National League baseball
team wearing the crown of the featherweight champ of the world.
Behind him he left a gallant little war veteran, Eugene Criqui. The
valiant little fighter displayed th
e same unconquersble spirit that
he and his compatriots showed in tthe face of the Boche at the
bloody field of Verdun.
Criqui left the field of battle tonight
bathed in blood as red and flowing as
freely as when he was carried off the
field of battle in France. During the
last six rounds. he was bleeding so
profusely. he could hardly soc. but
kept boring in and fighting with on
game a heart as ewr a tighter display-
ed. Dundee was admirable in \ictory.
and the writer does not wish to take-l
one bit of the credit that is due the
little Italian away from him. but in
the hour of defeat. Eugene Criqui was
heroic. Those l“rtDChnl(’n who wit-
nessed the battle should ever cnshroud
in their hearts. along with the memory
of the gallant Joan of Arc, the bloody
but unbctved head of the little Criqui.
The fight was all that the most ra-
hld fight. fan could wish for. but still
had an element of pathos around it in
the spectacle of a man who fought
four years of the worst strife that the
world has known. holder of a world's
title fur a few short wneks' standing
under a battering that would have
quellcd n more rugged man and still
pressing forward when every step
must have meant agony and pain.
To Johnny Dundee all honor is due

Dundee got the upper hand at ihcl

man. Three times in the first two
rounds. Criqui was stretched on the
canvass and three times he nrose ce-
fore the total ton was sounded over
him. In the mind of (very one of the
50,000 fans that crowded the Polo
Grounds was the thought. that. the

Round One
Criqui puts rights to the body and
Dundee tlmchod. Johnny staggered
Criqui with lofts to the jaw. and they
clinched nguin. Criqui walked in
and sent two hard rights to wind.
but Dundee got under his famous

Criqui soaking body with short
punches. Dundee ducked loft swings
and shot another hard left to the
Jaw. Criqui swung hard right to
body and Dundee was back with sev-
eral hard rights to jaw. flooring Cri-
qui for a count of nine. Criqui arose
and tried to swing. but Dundee was
cool and shot another left to face
Criqui was on top of Dundee with

Round Two .
Dundee was cool and soaked jaw
with hard left. Criqui sent. left to
body. but Dundee slammed a left to.
Jaw and Criqui went. nearly to his
knees. Two more staggered the
Frenchman but Criqui shot. a. hard
right. to body and Dundee hooked
nuother hard left to jaw and Criqui
went down for e. count of eight.
When he got up Dundee sent him
down again for a count of nine with
the same punch. Dundee measured
him and sent left to face. Criqui hit
Dundee low and Dundee told him to
be careful. Dundee shot more lofts
to four: and Criqui clinched. Bell.

Criqui came up strong and shot.

his right under heart. forcing Cri-
qui to lower his guard. Quick as a
flash Dundee slammed the Jew with
hie left. and Criqui missed two lens
and a right swing. He missed an-
other right swing and Dundee poked
leils.to face. Dundee started his danc-
ing tactics and Criqui tried body
swings as Johnny came off ropes but
Dundee avoided them and Jabbed u

clinched and held on. Criqui recover-
ed and sent a left to shoulder. He tried
a right swing hut Dundee blocked and
crossed five lofts in face. Clinch. Dun-
dee staggeder Criqui with. two lofts
to face. drawing the claret from the
nose. Dundee sent a hard .left and
right to Jaw. staggering Criqui. It
looked as if Criqui's mended Jaw had
given away. Criqui's seconds ex—
amined the Jaw and told referee it
was just a cut and the hout could go

Criqui came up tired and Dundee

this style and Criqui could not land a
clean punch. Dundee ducking all his
wild swings. Dundee rested up and
then started after Criqui. but the
champion this time got in a right to
wind which made Dundee cautious.

Criqui cleared his head by shaking
it and let fly a hard right swing but
Dundee ducked it and shot two left:

face but Dundee was on top of vim
