from serious injury yesterday after-
noon. while ' directing frame at
Schlaets corner. Having left his
motorcycle against a tree. he was
standing at the edge of the road to
direct tramc when a car. driven in a
reckless manner. struck the motor-
cycle and threw it across the road. It
It knocked Van to the ground. injur-
ing his knee. The driver of the car did
not. slow down to inquire to what ex-
tent Van had been injured. Word was
telephoned to Officer Clifford Nichols
who followed and brought back the
car: with three occupants. It was
found that John. Beattie had been
driving the car and that he had no
license. the car belonging to one of
the other boys. All were summoned to
appear in the town court today. Officer
Dominick brought Van to the Compo
beach pavilion emergency room where
Manager‘Dayton gave first aid.

rescue was made on Friday afternoon:
when an excursionist from the Swed-g

given. The other rescue was made'

tide. when the beach was filled.
Thousands of spectators watched
"Hop's" thrilling rescue. The man
got beyond his depth and was going
under for the third time when Hop
reached his side. He brought him
ashore. where he was worked over
and given stimulants. The huge
crowd was very quiet while this
thrilling rescue was being made. All-
other New York man was also treat—
ed by Mr. Benedict. but not for swim-
ming. While coming off one of the
excursion boats with a. baby in his
arms. he tripped and fell and sprain-
ed his ankle. He was taken to the
Life Saving station. where his ankle
was bandaged up.
